MONTENEGRO: Njeguški Steak


  • 4 beef steaks (about 200 grams each)
  • 100 grams Njeguški pršut (smoked ham from Montenegro)
  • 100 grams Njeguški cheese (smoked cheese from Montenegro)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Olive oil for cooking


  1. Preheat a grill or a skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Season the beef steaks with salt and pepper on both sides.
  3. Place the steaks on the grill or skillet and cook them to your desired level of doneness, usually about 3-4 minutes per side for medium-rare.
  4. While the steaks are cooking, slice the Njeguški pršut and Njeguški cheese into thin strips.
  5. In the last minute of cooking, top each steak with a layer of Njeguški pršut and Njeguški cheese, allowing the cheese to slightly melt.
  6. Remove the steaks from the heat and let them rest for a few minutes.
  7. Serve the Njeguški steaks hot, allowing the cheese to ooze over the steak.
  8. Accompany the steaks with roasted potatoes or a fresh salad, if desired.
